Ashtanga

Ashtanga Yoga is a system of yoga transmitted to the modern world by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, India. Using breath motivated movements, the practice involves very challenging set sequences that make up a total of 6 series in the Ashtanga system. This demanding practice generates intense heat and internal purification and is traditionally practiced 6 days a week.

Vinyasa Yoga

Vinyasa is also a breath motivated movement practice, but there are no set sequences. Teachers who are skilled in the art of proper sequencing design each class to their preference, so classes vary tremendously from teacher to teacher. Classes frequently include some form of simple pranayama (breath control).

Tantric Hatha

This style does not focus as much on using vinyasa, but more on creating dynamic movements within postures that are then juxtaposed with static postures. Teachers will incorporate various pranayamas, mantras (sacred sound), bandhas (internal locks) and meditation. In Tantric Hatha the focus is less on the body and more on collecting and directing prana (life force) in order to still the fluctuations of the mind and find unsurpassed calm within.

Pranayama

There are many, many techniques to control, regulate and retain the flow of breath. Pranayama is said to be the fastest way to change our mental state and I consider it a powerful, vital tool in any yoga or meditation practice.

Meditation

I draw upon my studies in the Kriya Yoga tradition, Tantra and the Psychic Horizons Institute. There are many meditation techniques I use or prescribe to others, depending upon individual needs. The goal of all yoga, regardless of style or tradition, is to be able to calm our minds.

Private Instruction

Private Sessions are truly my sweet spot as a teacher. This is where I get to hear what you need on an individual level and then I draw upon decades of learning to individualize a session tailor made for you. The focus of a private session can be as widely varied as to heal from physical, mental or emotional pain, to learn a new posture, to gather tools to help you heal and restore to wellness or anything else you can imagine. I have worked primarily and extensively with private clients for well over 20 years.

Teaching Style:

Through the shaping of the breath, my classes aim to synchronize body and mind through the exploration of postures so you can find your own inner calm no matter what life throws at you. My classes provide sequences to help you feel fully centered, grounded and invigorated, as well as restored.

Over the years, I have taught many thousands of group led classes, assisted in Mysore style Ashtanga and worked extensively with private clients, some of whom I saw twice weekly for well over a decade. My private clients had needs as varied as my own. Some were healing from cancer, hip replacements, injuries, physical abuse, emotional trauma and so much more. Yoga is meant to be adapted to the individual and I have continually applied a broad range of techniques and understanding in order to extract the full, vast benefits of yoga in my own practice as well as in my teaching.
